EXHIBITION STATEMENT

LaiSun Keane is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of Boston artist, Alysia Macaulay, titled Reshape And Reshuffle from July 11 - 25, 2020 to be held at our special Pop-Up location in Wellesley.

The mixed media-photographic collages of Alysia Macaulay challenge us to reconsider the natural world during this time of upheaval. For obvious reasons, the COVID19 pandemic and ongoing civil activism have significantly impacted our lives and Alysia Macaulay’s work speaks to this reconfigured world. This exhibition features her recent works of archival pigment prints on paper. Using draftsman’s instruments, Macaulay cuts printed photographs and papers and composes them into collages of ambiguous nature scenes framed or overlaid with highly saturated geometric colored shapes.

Macaulay explains that for this series, she “reshaped and reshuffled our waters and skies, to create new ways of looking at the world, a more inspired, inclusive, focused world.” According to Macaulay, this was her “way of taking control in a time when everything feels very much out of control. It is {her} way of pushing for change, encouraging disruption, challenging the way we see things. Change is good. Change is necessary.”

In essence, Macaulay’s work allows us to see the world around us through an altered lens, giving us alternative views and possibilities. For this exhibition, she has included her song playlist to give sounds to the sights she is presenting. The list is available on our website delivered via Spotify.

Macaulay studied photography at the International Center of Photography in New York and received her BA in Art History from William Smith College. She lived in New York City for a number of years, before moving back to her hometown of Boston in 2015.

A virtual reception will be held via Zoom on July 11, 5 - 6pm EST and a meet the artist event at our pop up location at 15 Central St Wellesley MA on July 18, 5 – 6pm.

Please email info@laisunkeane.com to RSVP for the Virtual Reception and Meet The Artist.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Reshape and Reshuffle

Chaotic. Fragmented. Damaged. These are words frequently used to describe the world in which we live today, be it outside our window, in our nations capital or across continents.

In this series of collages, I have reshaped and reshuffled our waters and skies, to create new ways of looking at the world, a more inspired, inclusive, focused world. In a sense, this is my way of taking control in a time when everything feels very much out of control. It is my way of pushing for change, encouraging disruption, challenging the way we see things. Change is good. Change is necessary. I want to inspire people to look at our world with fresh eyes.

We can do good. We can do better.
