Artist Bio
Jessica Tawczynski is a New York and Boston-based multidisciplinary artist whose work explores themes as diverse as mythology, the climate crisis, the enormity of the universe, and feminine identity. Using collage, found materials, map-making, and her own unique printmaking processes, Tawczynski creates anthropomorphic, dream-like caricatures of landscapes that transport viewers to a sublime reality.
Tawczynski received her MFA from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2017 and has since held residencies in Brooklyn and Northern Iceland. Notably, she received the Akureyri Art Museum's A.I.R. Fellowship in both 2019 and 2021, which culminated in two solo exhibitions respectively. Additionally, she has been the subject of solo shows in the Five Myles Gallery (Brooklyn, NY), the Olafsfjordur Museum (Olafsfjordur, Iceland), the Arts Research Collaborative (Lowell, MA), and the Deiglan Gallery (Akureyri, Iceland). In terms of group exhibitions, Tawczynski has been featured in Hera Gallery (Wakefield, RI), MassArt x SoWa Gallery (Boston), SPRING/BREAK Art Show 2022 (NY, NY), the Long Beach Island Foundation for the Arts and Sciences, Dodomu Gallery (Brooklyn, NY), Amos Eno Gallery (Brooklyn, NY), Atlantic Gallery (NY, NY), Boston University Gallery, and Boston City Hall Scollay Square Gallery. She has exhibited virtually with WoArtBlog, DoDoMu Gallery, BossCritt Artist Collective, and the Long Island City Artists (LIC-A). Her art has been recognized by renowned publications such as Hyperallergic and Boston Art Review.
Besides her extensive exhibition history, Tawczynski is passionate about arts education and advocacy, working as an administrator and archivist at The Estate of Norman Bluhm and giving multiple artist talks at MassArt and UMass Lowell. Tawczynski has also been interviewed on I Like Your Work Podcast, Canvas Rebel Magazine, Clotheslines, BossCritt, and Arts Research Collaborative. From March 2020 to August 2020, she founded and ran Inside Voices Art, an Instagram page where she interviewed artists internationally about their life and work during the Covid-19 shutdown. Despite being inactive, the platform continues to exist today as a record of this turbulent period's impact on artists across the world.
