Kiki Smith

b. 1954

Kiki Smith is a German-American artist based in New York City. Smith briefly studied at Hartford Art School before moving to New York and joining the downtown artist collective Colab. Smith’s works address the themes of sex, birth, regeneration and the natural world. Her figurative work confronted subjects such as AIDS and gender, while recent works have depicted the human condition in relationship to nature. Smith’s work is in numerous prominent museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Smith lives and works in New York City.
