Antonia Barolini-Alvarez American, b. 1994
Biography
Antonia Barolini-Alvarez is a painter and draftsperson working in watercolor, gouache, oil, marker, and colored pencil. Born in NYC to a Brazilian father and Italian mother, she was instilled with a deep appreciation for nature. Her artistic practice explores the tension between human instinct and intuition, and its struggle for expression within the confines of modern society. In 2016, she earned her BA in Studio Art from Bard College, where she was twice awarded the Bard Fund for Visual Learning Grant. She later received her MFA from the New York Academy of Art in 2019, where she was awarded the Terra Foundation’s Giverny Summer Residency. Her work has been shown in various group exhibitions, including “Mother and Child Group Show” (2019) at Sugarlift Gallery in New York City, “The Feminine Agenda Group Show” (2020) at Womenswork.art in Poughkeepsie, New York, the New York Academy of Art’s “Summer Exhibition” (2021, 2022), “Power Dynamics” at Powerhouse Arts, Brooklyn (2024) and “Once Upon a Time” at Echo Park Art Gallery, Los Angeles, CA (2025). She has taught at Pratt Institute, Hofstra University, Seton Hall University and currently teaches at the University of Houston-Downtown as an Assistant Professor.
