McGirk’s recent sky paintings mirror the dread and anxiety felt by a world perpetually doomscrolling. His skywatchers are entranced by the sublime, unable to look away. They are haunted by harbingers; clouds form specters, horsemen, and reapers who hover disquietly in the daylight. Like self-fulfilling pareidolia, clouds embody the guilt of a sunny day as the climate disintegrates, as viruses plague them, as empires unmake the world. Fluctuating between psychological and supernatural, his apocalypses intertwine art historical imagery from the Late Baroque and Romanticism with death symbols found in comic books, American blockbuster cinema, and heavy metal album covers. The works propose a cheeky paradox: calamity arrives not as a storm, but as a pleasant day with good weather.
