The average Gen X rural Midwesterner is just smart enough to perform and exaggerate on social media, but not smart enough to do it convincingly. What was once my greatest tribulation—the rural Midwest being relatively detached from the rest of the world—became an anthropological case study, a non-sexual voyeurism, through my painting practice. While there is rightful anger to be had with the blissful political and social unawareness this population carries, and its presence in their digital footprint, there is room to appreciate the inadvertent silliness and absurdity in it.
