When I think of Americana, I think of the meme: "I love my country, Philadelphia." Philly is the city I call home- a place dismissed as rough, dirty, violent, and poor, yet is so wholly defined by an unshakable sense of pride. Philadelphia is America's birthplace, rich with history, community, foody heavens, and most importantly an obsessive devotion to sport. No matter where I travel, conversations inevitably turn to Philadelphia the moment I reveal it as home, as our fans' reputation precedes us. For these drawings, I turned to the mythology of American sports, the importance placed on athletic icons, and Celebrity Worship. Suspended twisted up in the moment right before the play like fireworks ready to pop- they symbolize potential and thus the American dream. They are Celebrity, they are labor, they are spectacle, they are yin and yang, they are aspiration, they are Millionaires, they can be you!
