Painting with Two Balls transforms a tennis court into both playing field and page, embedding personal histories of literacy, art history, sexuality, and mourning within a single game. The crisp trompe-l'œil surface is interrupted by imprinted sneaker soles and other game-related debris that privilege movement over representation. Echoing the title of a Jasper Johns painting encountered in childhood, the two central tennis balls remain stubbornly literal while shifting between punctuation, bodies, and projectiles, as the court's circular openings drift between line calls, puncture wounds, hole-punched paper, and glory holes. Athletics and literacy emerge as parallel forms of learning, each demanding endurance through repetition, frustration, and uncertainty until fluency conceals the labor that made it possible. Like grief and self discovery, all are carried forward through countless revisions, quiet returns, and the persistence to begin again.
