“Tit for Tatts” is a portrait of the contemporary artist, Sam Earle. In the early post 9 /11 years I became interested in portraiture illustrating 21st century fashion trends. In...
“Tit for Tatts” is a portrait of the contemporary artist, Sam Earle. In the early post 9 /11 years I became interested in portraiture illustrating 21st century fashion trends. In my 50 years of painting the human figure I have watched with fascination the rise in body art and the tradition in western culture to draw inspiration from Japanese tattooing. Katasugi is the Japanese tradition of tattooing one side of the body with an asymmetrical layout. Tattooing one side of the body is symbolic of one’s life story still in progress. On the left side of the body the tattoos represent creativity, in this case appropriate as the subject is an artist. The tiger, an allegory for courage and protection from evil has evolved from a rigid symbol into a design choice adapted by the current trends of fashion.
