Family Photo Archive forms part of the foundation of Folded Line—A (접힌 선—ㄱ). After losing two grandparents during the pandemic, I turned to my family archive not to reconstruct fixed historical events, but to attend to the process of disappearance itself. Rust, with its slow processes of oxidation and erosion, became an essential material for thinking about how some traces remain even as time passes.
Originally created as one half of a diptych, Folded Line—A reflects on separation from what was once connected. I allow rust to soak into thin cotton, letting the material bleed, permeate, penetrate, or resist the surface. Through these processes, I attempt to follow the quiet yet irreversible ways time touches a body, letting memory and history remain in continual transformation.
